The Bridgeland neighbourhood in northeast Calgary, formerly known as Riverside, is a desirable community because of its proximity to both downtown Calgary and natural environments. It has a distinctive bohemian feel and is known for its walkability.
In 2010, Bridgeland was shortlisted as one of Calgary's five "most livable neighbourhoods"? in Fast Forward Weekly magazine.
Bridgeland has a rich history. It was first settled by Russian-German immigrants who came to Calgary during the city's first population boom in the 1880s. At the time, the community was called Germantown. Bridgeland real estate is primarily residential, but it's also home to a variety of shops, offices, schools, parks, and restaurants. The community also offers easy access to the city's pedestrian pathways.
In the southern part of Bridgeland are St. Patrick's Island and St. George's Island. St. George's Island is home to the Calgary Zoo, which houses over 1,000 animals from around the world. Bridgeland is also the start and finish point of the Scotiabank Calgary Marathon, the longest running marathon in Canada.
