Visit Calgary's Nose Hill Park

Calgary Home TeamAlthough the calendar officially still says, “winter,” many Calgarians are taking advantage of spring-like temperatures to get out and enjoy our abundance of area parks and pathways. One of our favorites is Nose Hill Park (5620 14 St. N.W.) in northwest Calgary.

Nose Hill Park was created in 1980, and covers over 11 square kilometres. The hill most likely gets its name from the fact that, by using a little imagination and standing in the right spots, it looks like a nose.

If you want to experience nature without leaving the city, you're sure to appreciate the Rough Fescue grassland in the park; Nose Hill Park contains one of the most significant examples of this grassland ecosystem left on the Canadian prairies. From the park's plateau, there are beautiful vistas including the Rocky Mountains, Bow River Valley and the vast plains to the east.

Don't be surprised if you see deer and coyotes roaming the grasslands and coulees in Nose Hill Park. The park is also home to porcupines, northern pocket gophers, squirrels and several species of mice and voles.

You should note that although coyotes also mainly feed on small mammals such as mice, they have on a few occasions attacked and killed pets in Nose Hill Park. If you want to ensure the safety of your pet, keep it on a leash at all times (even in the designated off-leash area on the top of Nose Hill). Coyotes are generally no threat to people but should be treated with respect and never approached or fed.

Nose Hill Park is surrounded by 12 residential communities; it has numerous hiking trails and dedicated off-leash areas.
