The long awaited recreation centre in Calgary's new urban district of Seton is close to breaking ground. Recently approved by the city, this 330,000 square foot facility is slated to open its doors in 2018 - a long way off, but this will be more than just a rec centre. A true community gathering place, the Recreation Centre will be run by YMCA Calgary and will combine fitness with youth and neighborhood programs, and include a new library. This is an ambitious undertaking that will benefit thousands of South Calgary residents.

Alberta Government Unveils details on new ConstructionCalgary new schools

The Alberta government announced on Feb. 10, 2014 it would be building six new public schools in Calgary, along with one new francophone and three new Catholic schools. One of those Catholic schools will be a southeast high school, but the community hasn't been announced yet. These new facilities will be in some of Calgary's faster growing communities like Cranston, Auburn Bay, and McKenzie Towne.

The new construction will see seven new schools built in the south, with northwest Calgary getting three new schools. An estimated 7,600 kids will now be able to attend a school that is much closer to home. In addition, the province will announce eight more new schools later this month as part of its
