Moving to CalgaryThe Calgary Home Team would like to welcome our new office admin, Beka Newman, to the company. She's relocated here from Medicine Hat, and has written this blog post, describing her adventure. This actually gives some pretty good tips for newcomers, or anyone moving to a new place.

Big City Move

As a new assistant to Ryan MacDonald and the Calgary Home Team, I wanted to share with you my moving experience. I relocated here about a month ago from Medicine Hat, AB. As much as I loved my former town, there were bigger and better things in life for me to experience and a lot more job opportunities available here, so I decided that the big city of Calgary was the place be. I knew a couple of people in the area, so I wouldn’t be totally on my own, and

STARS Lottery home winner

After getting left homeless for two months by the severe flooding in High River last year, William Rader and his young family now own a million-dollar home after winning one of the grand prizes in the 2014 STARS Lottery. The upscale house is in Red Deer.

When Rader, who lives with his partner of 18 years Tonya Kropf and two-year-old son Ethan, got the phone call about winning the dream home, STARS officials told him he'd won, but didn't tell him what he'd won. When he asked what his prize, he almost fell off his chair, thinking he'd likely have won a car or an early bird prize.

Their High River home in Sunshine Lake was flooded throughout the

Calgary condos, Calgary condos for saleWhen it comes Canada's baby boomer generation, many will be retiring and downsizing in the next few years. In fact, the statistics show that nearly 1,000 Canadians a day will retire over the coming 18 years. Retirement for baby boomers brings about the looming question of where to live for the next phase of their lives. The kids have left the nest, and most retirees will want to downsize their living space.

Downsizing definitely has its advantages. Here are a few good things about the "less is more" lifestyle:

  • A smaller home means a smaller or no mortgage
  • Downsizing usually means no yardwork or snow shovelling, and more time for fun
  • Lifestyle Upgrade: Live close to the amenities that bring you enjoyment

These new facilities will be in some of Calgary's faster growing communities like Cranston, Auburn Bay, and McKenzie Towne.

The new construction will see seven new schools built in the south, with northwest Calgary getting three new schools. An estimated 7,600 kids will now be able to attend a school that is much closer to home. In addition, the province will announce eight more new schools later this month as part of its

Mother Nature is unpredictable, but residents are in for a great time with a host of items on the agenda (some depending on the weather). Plans call for snow shoeing, a shinny hockey game (bring your gear) and recreational skating on the lake, street hockey on the basketball court (bring your sticks) and a kite boarding demonstration. Critics Decry Alberta's New Home Warranty, Calgary Herald

Critics are outraged at new home warranty regulations approved by cabinet this week because they say the regulations do more to limit claims by new home and condo owners than to protect them. The regulations for the New Home Buyer Protection Act begin in February and consist mostly of exclusions and limits to claims.

The regulations set the minimum level of coverage at $265,000 for homes and $130,000 for condos, while coverage for common property in condominiums and multi-family dwellings is capped at $3.3 million. Critics argue

Just because summer is over, doesn't mean you have to stay indoors!

We all know and love the benefits of living in a lake community in the summer – lazy beach days, playing tennis or beach volleyball, boating, kayaking and paddle boarding to name just a few. With the first snow fall just days behind us, and the lakes not yet frozen for ice skating, many of us are feeling resigned to the fact that winter is upon us and just want to curl up in front of the TV.

Calgary's Auburn Bay in the Fall

Not so fast! Don’t forget the beauty and tranquility that a lake community can offer this time of year. Take a half hour walk (with or without your kids) along the lake front and see it like you have never seen it before. Watch the seagulls swim in the frigid waters and look for food and the
