Calgary Gets Nod As One of World's Most Underrated Cities

Posted by Ryan MacDonald on Wednesday, June 18th, 2014 at 1:04pm.

Better to be underrated than overrated, right? Well it looks like Calgary's doing alright after CNN International named the Stampede City one of its 10 most underrated cities in the world.

CNN has got Calgary nestled in there alongside world-class cities like Queens, NY., Bergen, Norway, and Lisbon, Portugal. We can't help but agree with the good folks at CNN: Calgary, with its western heritage, is definitely an underrated city.

Where else in the world does a city host a 10-day party complete with 10-gallon cowboy hats, rodeos, chuckwagons and plenty of cold beer to wash it all down? And don't forget the pancake breakfasts! Yes, the Calgary Stampede is one reason the Stampede City is on CNN's list.

Calgary is the gateway to the Rockies and some of the most spectacular places in Canada. The mountain playgrounds of Kananaskis Country, Canmore, Banff and Lake Louise are all fairly close, and go a long way to getting Calgary on the list.

Another plus for the city, according to CNN, is the growing foodie scene in Calgary. The Stampede City is earning a reputation as an up and coming player when it comes to creative and thoughtful new restaurants. Currently there are dozens and dozens of outstanding restaurants in Downtown Calgary alone. Names like Teatro, Rouge, Blink and Alloy are among some of the top spots when it comes to cuisine in Calgary.

CNN reviewers also liked what the Glenbow Museum does for the city. With its well-known art collection, ethnology collection, focus on military history and mineralogy, the Glenbow is regarded as one of Canada's finest museums. It also boasts and incredible library with more than 100,000 books, maps, and newspapers dating back to the earliest pioneers.

Another benefit Calgary enjoys is a world-class farmers market. Open from May-September, Calgarians can find a nice selection of fresh produce, pastas, baked goods and a wide variety of other items.

To top it all off, Calgary has the NHL's Flames and the proud Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League.
