Calgary Home TeamDo you know how to be a "good" recycler? If not, don't worry - many people aren't! The good news, according to HouseLogic, is that it doesn’t take a lot of effort to be a smart recycler. Here are their tips on how to become one of the best recyclers in your town:

1. If you use  plastic bottles, get rid of the twist-off cap and that little ring around the neck. They aren't recyclable! Do your part, because recycling center employees don't have the time to do so.

3. Rinse everything. It’s more efficient if the recycling center gets items that have been cleaned, and rinsing prevents your recycling bin from getting stinky and attracting

Calgary Home TeamIf you're trying to cut your utility bills, that doesn't mean you need to run out and buynew energy-efficient appliances. According to HouseLogic, if you develop some simple good habits, you'll improve the energy efficiency of your large kitchen appliances.

The experts suggest that you look first at the refrigerator (a HUGE energy guzzler!). Because it constantlycycles on and off, your fridge uses more electricity than nearly all other appliances. But with a few simple adjustments, you can trim about $38 to $45 from your utility bills.

Reset the thermostat. Adjust it so that it stays around 37-40 degrees. For the freezer, go between 0-5 degrees F.

Clean the coils. When dust collects on the condenser coils, the unit has to work harder than necessary.
